EP Activity This Month
Our Executive Presbyter, Ralph Hawkins, will be leading a retreat for pastors in Lake Erie and Western New York presbyteries (Feb 5-7) and will be preaching at Harlansburg (Feb 4) and North Liberty (Feb 11). He is on the planning team for the national Fellowship Community gathering in Atlanta (Feb 20-22). Ralph welcomes opportunities to preach or bring greetings during a worship service, as well as opportunities to visit Session and Deacon meetings. Stated Clerk Updates
- TE Catherine Craley was installed as pastor of Trinity church in Mercer on January 21.
- TE Jordan Rimmer will be installed as pastor of Northminster church on April 15.
- TE John Lersch (HR) is preaching for the Moravia congregation during the winter and spring.
- Carolyn Moss has begun service as Temporary Pastor of Slippery Rock church in Ellwood City, pending her examination and ordination by the presbytery on February 27.
- RE Donna Heard will be commissioned on February 27 to serve as pastor of the Word Centered congregation in Sharon, having previously served there as an assistant pastor.
- Pastor Nominating Committees are actively searching for installed Teaching Elders for the Clen-Moore and First New Castle congregations.
It’s time for Annual Reports again!
The GA online statistical program is located at http://oga.pcusa.org/stats. Clerks will use the same “user name” and “password” as they have used the past few years. Please note the the password should contain an “!” and is case-sensitive. The deadline for entering your statistical information is February 13, 2018 at midnight. If you have forgotten your user name and password, please call or email the Presbytery office. (Note: If you changed your password from what was assigned by the denomination, we will not have that new password.) There is a “Frequently Asked Questions” page available to help with most common questions.
Presbytery annual reports are available on the “Resources” page of the Presbytery website. They are downloadable as WORD and EXCEL files and the completed forms can either be mailed to the office or emailed to Autumn at email@example.com. The deadline for completing these forms is January 31, 2018. Several churches have not been able to complete their reports by the January deadline in the past, please note that in order for your deceased elders to be included in the special service at the February presbytery meeting, your Necrology form MUST be received at the office by February 9th!
Soul Shop: Ministering to Suicidal Desperation
Soul Shop™ will be hosted at North Liberty Presbyterian Church (209 North Liberty -Plain Grove Road, Grove City) on Saturday, March 10, 2018 from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. (Registration begins at 8:30 AM.) This one day course for every lay leaders who shapes the ministry of a church, both clergy and lay persons, will cost $25.00 per person. This will cover the conference fee, materials, refreshments and lunch.
This is a one-day training to equip faith community leaders to minister to those impacted by suicidal desperation. This includes the creation of worship resource, training congregation members in suicide awareness and basic conversation skills, and the invitation to those who have been suicidal in the past to share their stories.
The Egyptian Church Post Arab Spring: Challenges and Opportunities will be presented on Saturday, February 3, 2018 (10:00-11:00 AM) at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary featuring The Rev. Dr. Andrea Zaki, President of the Protestant Churches of Egypt, General Director of the Coptic Evangelical Organization for Social Services (CEOSS). The Board of Directors of the Camping Association of the Presbyteries of Northwestern Pennsylvania (CAPNWP) is seeking to hire a maintenance person for Camp Lambec in North Springfield, PA. Must have skills to do plumbing repairs, electrical, building repairs, maintenance on equipment, mow grass and weed-whack, operate water treatment system and follow all DEP and/or Health Department laws and regulations regarding the use and testing of Camp Lambec’s drinking water. The position runs March through October. Interested persons should call CAPNWP Board Member Bob Meanor at (724) 375-5926 between the hours of 6pm and 10pm.
LAMBEC Capital Campaign
The Camping Association of the Presbyteries of Northwestern Pennsylvania is conducting a $100,000 capital campaign to restore the water system for Camp Lambec. The system needs a DEP-approved overhaul, and we are starting those repairs with an approved contractor. This is an expensive overhaul, but it is necessary to continue the ministry to youth and families. As such, the Board has authorized a $100K campaign to address this and other items of deferred maintenance. The Board is committed to the continued operation of Camp Lambec, as we believe firmly that this ministry provides unique and powerful discipleship opportunities for participants. Individual donations can be made online using this link. Church contributions can be coordinated through the Shenango Presbytery office.
Save the Date!
Beaver-Butler Presbytery, in cooperation with Pittsburgh Presbytery, the Southwestern PA Synod of the ELCA, and the Western PA Conference of the United Methodist Church present a Day with Tod Bolsinger, author of Canoeing the Mountains: Christian Leadership in Uncharted Territory. This event will be hosted at Cranberry Community United Presbyterian Church, Cranberry Township, PA on Friday, September 21 from 9 AM to 2:30 PM. Included will be a special Q&A session for those involved in small groups discussing Bolsinger’s book. More information is coming in the months ahead!
News From the Churches
No matter what the circumstances, grief recovery is a painful process. A GriefShare seminar/support group is being hosted and sponsored by Calvin Presbyterian Church. The program will be facilitated by Ginny Brest. The first session is scheduled for Sunday, February 4 from 1:300-3:30 p.m. in the church parlor. The group will meet each Sunday afternoon (except April 1, Easter Sunday) for 13 weeks, concluding on May 6 . While participants are encouraged to complete the 13-week program if possible, attendance is not mandatory each week. The program is free and open to anyone in the community (and beyond) because we understand how deeply grief and loss hurts people and families. This is a place where many people have found they can begin to put their lives back together again. The program is open to anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one to help them through the grief process. Work As Worship Retreat
Eleven influential business leaders and pastors will discuss what it looks like to connect faith and work. Taking place as a 1-Day Local Church Retreat, the live event in Dallas will be web-streamed to over 2,000 churches around the world. Hosted locally on February 23rd, from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM at North Liberty Presbyterian Church (209 North Liberty-Plain Grove Road, Grove City 724-794-4383) or at Westfield Presbyterian Church (1363 Mt. Jackson Road, New Castle 724-667-7045). Registration will begin onsite at 8 AM and the fee for the day is $25 which includes refreshments, lunch, and conference fee.
A Sunday Afternoon Treat
On Sunday afternoon, February 25th at 2:30 PM, First Presbyterian Church of Sharon will host Merry Ann “Jig” Groves in Fellowship Hall as she shares with us her pictures and the story of her recent pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago in Spain. This pilgrimage has been around for centuries and Jig is thrilled to have been able to make this journey. At the base of the Iron Cross on the Camino de Satiago, pilgrims place stones. Jig carried one of First’s “Sharin’ Rocks” in her backpack and placed it at the Iron Cross. She has a picture showing her putting our rock among the thousands that have been left there. Hers is a wonderful story with beautiful pictures. Come, bring friends, and travel the Camino de Santiago with Jig. We will serve dessert and coffee/tea. This Sunday afternoon treat is free and open to the public.
