Presbyterian Disaster Assistance – Nepal Earthquake

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance responds to earthquake disaster in Nepal

nepal2Thousands are dead or injured from the massive earthquake and aftershocks that shook Nepal and neighboring countries on April 25.  The quake, the worst in more than 80 years, struck just west of the capital of Kathmandu and destroyed towns and mountainous villages.  The government of Nepal has officially requested international assistance and declared a state of emergency.

Presbyterian Disaster Asistance (PDA) is providing emergency relief and short-term recovery in the impacted areas with our partner ACT Alliance, and its members who are already on the ground.  PDA will remain active through the long term recovery, accompanying our partners in the area as they determine long-term program needs and providing financial support for rebuilding and resilience.

The needs for the response will be great.  God’s people are once again called on to stand in the “GAP” – Give.  Act.  Pray.

Financial support by churches can be sent to the Presbytery Office.  Please mark “DR999999 Nepal” in the memo line of the check or accompanying note.

For more information, visit http://www.pcusa.org/pda.

#neighborhood

“The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood.”  (John 1:14, The Message)

Matthew remembers how Jesus broke bread and multiplied some fish and 8,000 or more were fed (when you count the woman and children … and we should always count the women and children!). Recently, members of the Calvin Presbyterian Church in Ellwood City mixed ingredients and sealed packets such that, in time, some 60,000 persons will be fed. Who knew we could take our Lord at his word when he promised us, “the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father.” (Matthew 15, John 14, respectively)

Calvin 1

Folks gathered in the basement of the Calvin church last month and, with some help from the staff of Stop Hunger Now, over 50 persons of all ages formed an assembly line that would have made Henry Ford himself proud. Rice, seasonings, and vitamins were merged in proportional amounts. This concoction was placed in plastic bags, then weighed, adjusted, and sealed. One by one, the meals made their way through the assembly process, only to be stacked, boxed, and loaded onto a truck for shipment to a warehouse here in Pennsylvania. From there, the Stop Hunger Now folks will distribute the meals around the country and around the world, as needed.

The 6 year old kid working alongside the 85 year old saint both jumped every time the gong was struck announcing another 1,000 meals packed. Everyone cheered with every gong. Before it was even time to break fro lunch, 10,000 meals were bagged. And at 6 servings per packet, these boil-and-eat meals will go on to nourish some 60,000 souls, as noted above. They will find their way to natural disasters and places of human struggle all around the world. Granted, pallets of uncooked rice and empty plastic pouches may not be quite as miraculous a starting point as multiplied fish and bread, but 53 persons producing 10,000 pouches which will feed 60,000 persons at only 29 cents a meal—surely these are numbers that would please the Host of all our meals, great or small, then or now, fish or rice.

The Christians at Calvin Church sacrificed an otherwise fine Saturday morning to feed their neighbors, some of whom may well be halfway around the planet. What’s going on like this in your #neighborhood?
