2015 Minimum Terms of Call

Last week, the presbytery approved the Committee on Ministry’s recommendation that the minimum Terms of Call for 2015 for Teaching Elders in full-time service be increased by 1% to $48,138 (a $478 increase).

Attention Church Treasurers!

The PA Department of Revenue has decided to grant an early renewal of the PA sales tax exemption numbers of religious organizations who belong to a “parent” organization.  This early renewal is due to the implementation of a new tax system in the near future.  Updated certificates will be sent to the organization starting this Friday.  Please look for your updated PA sales tax exemption certificate in the mail.  If you do not receive your updated certificate by December 31, 2014, please send an email to treasurer@syntrinity.org and include the Church/Presbytery name, mailing address, and EIN#.  If you have any questions, contact Chantal at the Synod office at 717-737-0421.

Celebrate Sudan 2014

On World Communion Sunday, Presbyterian churches in the environs of Shenango Presbytery will come together for the 5th year to celebrate and pray for our partnership with the Sudan Presbyterian Evangelical Church and the South Sudan Evangelical Presbyterian Church.  This event will take place on October 5th at East Main Presbyterian Church at 7PM. We are honored to have Rev. Madut Ngor from Sudan with us this year. As usual, we are asking churches to take up a special offering for Celebrate Sudan on World Communion Sunday, or another Sunday…. Remember, Session approval for this offering is needed.

This year the special offerings collected will be used to help the church in South Sudan provide assistance for South Sudanese refugees, and to assist the two schools in the north (Khartoum) which train church leaders, Nile Theological College and Gereif Bible School. Please join us for a time of music, inspiration, prayer, fellowship, and authentic Sudanese food!!!

We are honored to have Rev. Madut Ngor from South Sudan with us this year. Rev. Madut along with his wife Nada has 3 children, Alek 11, Aker 9 and Tong 5.  He is the Deputy Secretary General of SSPEC and teaches Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University of Juba.  SSPEC Executive Committee has asked Rev. Sudan “Celebration Choir” Rehearsal

Ugandan Kids Choir at 1st Sharon

A group of 10 talented Ugandan children will be performing traditional song and dance at First Presbyterian Church of Sharon on October 5th at 6:00 PM.  The Ugandan Kids Choir is a ministry of Childcare Worldwide, which has been dedicated to empowering children in the developing world since 1981.

New Series at Northminster

Experience contemporary and ancient worship with a new sermon series, The Blood Covenant, starting in October at Northminster Presbyterian Church, (2434 Wilmington Road, New Castle).  The series will take place on Thursday evenings, October 9, 16, 23, and 30 at 7:00 PM.  It is open to the community and childcare is available.

Corn Maze Worship

On Sunday, September 21, three Shenango congregations shared a joint outdoor worship service at the Cool Spring Corn Maze.  The Sandy Lake, Coolspring, and Stoneboro congregations came together for worship and fellowship in the barn.  A wonderful time was had by all.

McClure Lecture

Ugandan Kids Choir at 1st Sharon

A group of 10 talented Ugandan children will be performing traditional song and dance at First Presbyterian Church of Sharon on October 5th at 6:00 PM.  The Ugandan Kids Choir is a ministry of Childcare Worldwide, which has been dedicated to empowering children in the developing world since 1981.

New Series at Northminster

Experience contemporary and ancient worship with a new sermon series, The Blood Covenant, starting in October at Northminster Presbyterian Church, (2434 Wilmington Road, New Castle).  The series will take place on Thursday evenings, October 9, 16, 23, and 30 at 7:00 PM.  It is open to the community and childcare is available.

Celebrate Sudan 2014

On World Communion Sunday, Presbyterian churches in the environs of Shenango Presbytery will come together for the 5th year to celebrate and pray for our partnership with the Sudan Presbyterian Evangelical Church and the South Sudan Evangelical Presbyterian Church.  This event will take place on October 5th at East Main Presbyterian Church at 7PM. We are honored to have Rev. Madut Ngor from Sudan with us this year. As usual, we are asking churches to take up a special offering for Celebrate Sudan on World Communion Sunday, or another Sunday…. Remember, Session approval for this offering is needed.

This year the special offerings collected will be used to help the church in South Sudan provide assistance for South Sudanese refugees, and to assist the two schools in the north (Khartoum) which train church leaders, Nile Theological College and Gereif Bible School. Please join us for a time of music, inspiration, prayer, fellowship, and authentic Sudanese food!!!

We are honored to have Rev. Madut Ngor from South Sudan with us this year. Rev. Madut along with his wife Nada has 3 children, Alek 11, Aker 9 and Tong 5.  He is the Deputy Secretary General of SSPEC and teaches Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University of Juba.  SSPEC Executive Committee has asked Rev. Madut to plan the establishment of a Bible Institute in Juba.

Prayers

Our friend, Dr. Jannie Swart, professor at PTS, died yesterday of an apparent heart attack while playing frisbee with students at the seminary.  Many of you will remember Jannie as a leader in Shenango’s Missional Church Clusters, and most recently as leader of the Spring Pastor Retreat earlier this year.  Please keep his wife Mari, children Suné and Janco, and the seminary community in your prayers.  A memorial article can be found here: http://www.pts.edu/Mourning_Jannie_Swart

The Fellowship Community – Regional Event

The Fellowship Community, recently known as The Fellowship of Presbyterians, will be holding a Regional Event September 14-15 at the Hampton Presbyterian Church in Gibsonia, PA.  The Sunday portion of the event is for everyone and features dinner and an introduction to The Fellowship Community.  The Monday portion is focused on pastors and includes lunch.  Email office@shenango.org for a copy of the flyer, if you are interested in attending (reservations are requested by September 10).

EP Activity This Month

Our Executive Presbyter, Ralph Hawkins, will be preaching this month at Shenango church (September 14) and attending the outdoor worship service shared by Coolspring, Stoneboro, and Sandy Lake churches (September 21).  He will participate in the Fellowship Community (formerly Fellowship of Presbyterians) event in Gibsonia, Pa (September 14-15) and attend the national Sentralized Conference on missional church practice, in Dallas (September 25-27).  He will be meeting with the leadership of Wampum church and Word Centered Fellowship this month, as well as the Jamestown congregation.  Ralph welcomes opportunities to preach or bring greetings during a worship service, as well as opportunities to visit Session and Deacon meetings.   Schedule a Sunday or a meeting time by contacting him at 724-528-1610 or ralph@shenango.org.

If you are a member of a Shenango Presbytery church and are applying for the Presbytery scholarship to help with the cost of the Perspectives on the World Christian Movement course please use the code PBY100 when you register.  It will deduct a $100 payment at that time – however, it is NOT a guarantee of the scholarship.  The Mission Education Scholarship Form from the Presbytery office will need to be completed and accepted in order for that scholarship to be paid. If a form is not submitted, the payment will not be made and the student will owe the balance due.

Information on the course is available online at www.perspectives.org. Go to Classes, click PA on the US map, and then select the Grove City Class. Class begins Tuesday, Sept. 9th  and is open to the public. Jen Haddox of World Mission Initiative will be the instructor for the first lesson, The Living God is a Missionary God.

McClure Lecture

Join us for the annual W. Don McClure Lectures Mon., Sept. 29, and Tues., Sept. 30, 2014. Keynote speaker is Daniel Jeyaraj, professor of world Christianity and director of the Andrew Walls Centre at Liverpool Hope University in Liverpool, UK. These lectures and discussions, held in the Knox Room, Long Hall, are free and open to the public.

This year’s lectures will address the topic, “Engaging with God and the Gospel Cross-Culturally.” Where there is pain, the church should go, but when the church is in pain, where do we go? Financial Peace University

Casting Call for the Dr. Bailey play Open Hearts in Bethlehem

will take place this  Sat., Sept. 6th.  Auditions will be held at 3:00 pm at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 110 E. Market St, Mercer (just east of the Courthouse).  You may be needed until 6:00 pm. There are 12 speaking parts including a narrator and solos for 3 women and one girl.  Rehearsals will begin mid-October. The play will be presented Dec. 12, 13 and 14. Performing in this play will be a wonderful way to honor Dr. Bailey. All are welcome to audition.
