“Beyond the Basics”: A Teacher Training Seminar (At LeaderFest, January 14th)

What do we expect from those teaching in our churches?  The Seminar “Beyond the Basics” at LeaderFest is designed for everyone teaching in the church.  Participants will look at a list of minimum expectations and then consider ways they might go beyond these to fulfill their calling to the ministry of teaching.  If your church has been wanting to provide training for your teachers, this seminar is what you’ve been looking for.  The seminar is led by Dr. Margaret Trautman.

IRS Mileage Rate

The IRS Mileage Rate for 2012 will be .555 cents per mile.

Martin Luther King Jr. Community Remembrance and Celebration Breakfast

Join Westminster College (in the Witherspoon Rooms of McKelvey Student Center) on Thursday, January 19, 2012 from 8 – 9:15 AM for the celebration featuring guest speaker Rev. Congratulations to Ken Bailey and Gary Smith

The recent issue of Christianity Today recognized Ken Bailey’s Paul Through Mediterranean Eyes (IVP Academic) as the top book in Biblical studies for 2011.  Gary Smith’s (Grove City College) Heaven in the American Imagination (Oxford University Press) received the Award of Merit in history.  http://www.christianitytoday.com/et/2012/january/2012-book-awards.html.  Gary was also interviewed about his previous book, Faith and the Presidency from George Washington to George W. Bush.  Congratulations to Ken and Gary for outstanding academic contributions!

Mission Yearbook – Dominican Republic

Missa Eaton / Jordan Biel to appear at Cana’s Corner Grand Re-opening

On January 10, 2012, we welcome you to Cana’s Corner Coffeehouse’s new location at First Presbyterian Church of Sharon, located at 600 E. State Street, from 7-9 pM.  Appearing will be Missa Eaton from Sharon, PA and Jordan Biel from Kinsman, OH.  Missa has sung at the coffeehouse before and Jordan is well known to folks who have gone to the “Valley Alive” crusade this past summer.  A free will offering will be taken to cover the cost of our musicians and the food.  We look forward to an exciting year of the Lord blessing us with music once again.

Mission Giving Deadline

It is not too late to remind people that contributions for the year 2011 must be given to the church by December 31, 2011 or mailed in an envelope postmarked December 31, 2011. Monies received after the start of 2012 cannot be attributed to the 2011 year. The deadline for monies sent to the Presbytery office must be postmarked by Friday, January 6, 2011.

Office Closed

Just a reminder that the Presbytery Office will be closed from December 23rd through January 2nd.  Rev. Dawson will be checking his email and voicemail regularly throughout the week, but if an emergency arises you may call his cell phone at 724-730-1934.

Faith Presbyterian Church will present Bethlehem Blvd. on Sunday, December 18 from 4-8 PM.  Come celebrate the joy of Christmas by wandering the streets of ancient day Bethlehem on the day when Jesus was born.  Visit the Synagogue, a Jewish Home, a Marketplace, and conclude your night by visiting the Holy Family in a live nativity.  Self-guided tours run continually from 4-8 PM and take approx. 1 hour to complete.  Admission is FREE!

Community Advent Luncheon

The 14th Annual Community Advent Luncheon, hosted by First Presbyterian Church of New Castle, will be held Wednesday, December 14 at 12 noon.  Speaker is Rev. Nathan Loudon.  $5.00 donation for lunch.  The event is sponsored by the Downtown New Castle Churches: First Christian Church; Mary, Mother of Hope Parish, and 1st Presbyterian.  Reservations not needed, call the church office 724-652-7706 for more information.

“S.L.I.M. Brothers”, men’s gospel trio from the Sandy Lake area will be with us on Tuesday, December 13th.  If you like the Gaithers, please come.  The coffeehouse meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM.   This is our last coffeehouse program at the Bethlehem Presbyterian (710 Carnegie Street) location.  Starting in January 2012 we will be moving to the First Presbyterian Church in Sharon!   Look for exciting news to come!  For more information, call (724) 866-3061 and ask for Robyn.  Hope to see you all there!

ROOT International is being blessed with 40,000 lbs. of rice for Mexico.  They need help raising $5,000 before Christmas.  The food will go to feed children and the elderly, and will be distributed among dining facilities, orphanages, and schools.  They are partnering with other groups, and prayers are needed for protection over the food and for the workers, pastors, and ministry workers who will distribute the food.  Donations can be sent to: ROOT International, PO Box 26812, El Paso, TX  79926 or go to http://www.rootinternational.org to donate through PayPal.

Advent Taize Service

First Presbyterian Church in Sharon is hosting the Notre Dame Folk Group on Sunday evening, December 11th at 7:00 PM as they lead an Advent Taize worship service.  This lovely, musical, candlelit service is quiet, reflective, prayerful, and a perfect way to welcome the One who comes to us.  {The Notre Dame Folk Group also leads the Taize services at Villa Maria.}  The service is free and open to the public.  A time of refreshments and fellowship will follow the service.

Two Holiday Events at Covenant

“Blue Christmas Service”

For many people, the approaching Christmas holidays do not bring with them the joy and merriment that is advertised on television or in greeting cards.  Some persons are experiencing losses of various kinds, and may be grieving.  New Wilmington Presbyterian Church will be offering a “Blue Christmas Service” on Sunday, December 4th at 5:30 PM.  This service will offer an opportunity to gather for a quiet time of hope and celebration in the midst of any experiences of sadness or stress.  This time is less about colored lights, and more about Jesus, the Light who shines into our darkness.  This worship is less about sparkling holiday cheer and more about finding stillness and divine strength.  Open to the community, we encourage you to invite any family or friends who may find Christmas a difficult season.

Living Nativity

Westfield Church (Rt. 108 just west of Mt. Jackson) will host a living nativity on Saturday, December 3rd from 6-8 PM.  This holiday drive-through experience features carolers, live actors and animals, and over 1000 luminaries.  Invite your neighbors, friends, and relatives to attend this free gift to the community. For many people, the approaching Christmas holidays do not bring with them the joy and merriment that is advertised on television or in greeting cards.  Some persons are experiencing losses of various kinds, and may be grieving.  New Wilmington Presbyterian Church will be offering a “Blue Christmas Service” on Sunday, December 4th at 5:30 PM.  This service will offer an opportunity to gather for a quiet time of hope and celebration in the midst of any experiences of sadness or stress.  This time is less about colored lights, and more about Jesus, the Light who shines into our darkness.  This worship is less about sparkling holiday cheer and more about finding stillness and divine strength.  Open to the community, we encourage you to invite any family or friends who may find Christmas a difficult season.

Living Nativity

Westfield Church (Rt. 108 just west of Mt. Jackson) will host a living nativity on Saturday, December 3rd from 6-8 PM.  This holiday drive-through experience features carolers, live actors and animals, and over 1000 luminaries.  Invite your neighbors, friends, and relatives to attend this free gift to the community. Treasured Hymns Ministry to Appear at Cana’s Corner

“Treasured Hymns Ministry”, father and son group from East Palestine, OH will be with us singing medleys of your favorite hymns on Tuesday, November 22nd.  The coffeehouse meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays from 7-9 PM.  We are located at 710 Carnegie Street, Sharon, across from the Wengler baseball field.  For more information, call 724-866-3061 and ask for Robyn.  Hope to see you all there!
