300th Anniversary of Our Synod

The Synod of the Trinity, which includes Shenango Presbytery, is gearing up to celebrate its 300th anniversary.  Mike Givler, with the Synod, writes, “Because the history of our churches is what makes up the history of the Synod, we’re looking for people who have a passion for history to help us gather information and help us celebrate. I have been in touch with all of our presbyteries looking for volunteers to assist us in this project and I have received a few names. If you or someone you know would be interested in helping out, let me know. And please spread the word that we are looking for volunteers. After all, it’s the people in the pews who helped shape what the Synod of the Trinity is today.”  Interested in history and willing to help?  Contact our EP Ralph in the presbytery office: ralph@shenango.org or 724-528-1610

Fellowship Community

The Lebanon and Jamestown congregations have found the commitments and the resources of the Fellowship Community (formerly “Fellowship of Presbyterians”) to be an asset in our present denominational environment.  Both churches have joined this movement; likely other Shenango churches will as well.  I will be attending the National Gathering in August and would glad for other Shenango leaders to come along.  Check out their website and reach out to pastors Augie Hurst (Lebanon) or Don Stanely (Jamestown), or to me, for more information. — Ralph

eLink News – EXTRA!

Rev. Malcolm S. Vandevort, Jr., 93, honorably retired member of our Shenango Presbytery, died on Thursday after a bout with cancer.  A long time Presbyterian missionary in Ethiopia, he also served several churches here in western PA and was known by many in our presbytery.  One of Malcolm’s daughters is Rachel Weller, also serving in Ethiopia and, along with her husband Michael, is supported by some of our Shenango congregations.  Writes Rachel,

“On Thursday, July 2,2015, four weeks shy of his 94th birthday, Dad went to meet Jesus and to claim the place prepared for him in heaven.  While Dad was on this earth, he lived his with the acute knowledge that everything he did was in glory to God and for the sake of Jesus Christ – because he lives! Our sorrow is tempered with the understanding that, because Jesus lives, Dad also continues to live and enjoy God forever!”
A service of witness to the resurrection will be held at 11am this Wednesday, July 8, 2015, at First Presbyterian Church  Franklin, PA, where Martha Vandevort, his wife, is a member. A lunch hosted by the church will follow. All are welcome.  Condolences can be sent to 722 Belmar Rd., Franklin, PA, 16323, or by email.

Missionary Offering #1

Our Council approved the gathering of an offering at each of our stated presbytery meetings for the next year, to support a designated PCUSA mission co-worker, selected each time by our MCS committee.  At our June 23 meeting, elders and pastors collected over $1200 to add to the support of Nancy McGaughey — a mission worker in South Sudan, supported by many of our congregations.  In response to the offering, Nancy wrote:

“To the Churches and Pastors of The Presbytery of Shenango:  I am humbled by your generous offering.  Shenango Presbytery has been a supporter of mine for several years and you never cease to amaze me by your generous support and continual coverage in prayer.  Thank you seems so inadequate, but for lack of something better, thank you so much.  May God bless all of you as you have so richly blessed me. In Him, Nancy.”

The MCS committee and our Council thank our pastors and elders for their generosity.  We look forward to the next four meetings and the oppurtunity to bless four more of the missionaries supported by Shenango churches.

#neighborhood

“The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood.”  (John 1:14, The Message)

The New Testament reports, “When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.”  That happened once in first century Jerusalem, with the strange and wonderful outpouring of the Holy Spirit on those first gen disciples.  But this “all together” assembly happened again in New Castle, just this last month, when six of our churches came together in one place for the third Pentecost Sunday in a row.  All around the New Castle High School auditorium there were red shirts and dresses marking a red flame day.  Red stoles set against black Geneva robes offered bold relief around the necks of our seven New Castle pastors.  One of them, during the children’s time, turned on a fan with long, red streamers attached.  As it blew and the red papers fluttered in the breeze, the children were reminded that powerful winds once blew on those ancient believers who were all together in once place … and that they can blow again still.

In these leaner days for Presbyterians, giving up a Sunday morning in a church’s own sanctuary is no small sacrifice.  There’s always the temptation to hunker down, to fly solo, to collect another full offering, and to make certain no mythical random visitors find the doors to our buildings inexplicably barred from within.  But for three years in a row, six of our churches have been willing to bear that risk in order to come together in once place.  And not just Pentecost: Thanksgiving, Maundy Thursday, Vacation Bible School, etc.  In a do-your-own-thing culture, there is a strong witness in these assemblies.

Unity is God’s gift to the Church in Jesus Christ. Just as God is one God and Jesus Christ is our one Savior, so the Church is one because it belongs to its one Lord, Jesus Christ. The Church seeks to include all people and is never content to enjoy the benefits of Christian community for itself alone. There is one Church, for there is one Spirit, one hope, “one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all” (Eph. 4:5–6).

That’s a nice nugget of instruction from our Book of Order.  And it is a timely word.  In many of our congregations, there is a growing sense of among elders and pastors that we can no longer afford to see our sister churches as competitors or threats.  All of our churches face common challenges: decline in community demographics, shifting religious appetites, and generational decay around key commitments.  The truth is, we need one another.  In the power of the Holy Spirit, we are always better together.  That’s the way forward.

“The Church seeks to include all people and is never content to enjoy the benefits of Christian community for itself alone.”  How’s that gospel wind blowing in your #neighborhood?

The Bible in 90 Days

The presbytery’s Christian Education and Evangelism Committees are encouraging churches in the presbytery to participate in the Bible in 90 Days this fall. This whole-church challenge is designed like the ultimate book club—everyone in the church reads the Bible, cover to cover, in just 12 pages a day. Each week, small groups gather to discuss the week’s readings. The weekly sermons are also focused on the readings. This challenge has the potential to be a transformative moment for our churches as our people read God’s word and take on a meaningful challenge together.

The Christian Education and Evangelism Committees want to support you in this task! They have provided some resources/templates/ideas that you can download and use in order to promote and implement this challenge in your church.

In return, they ask that you register your church so that they can continue to provide you with support and resources and so that they can do some community-wide publicity. All churches that register by July 15 will receive a free leader’s pack, courtesy of the Christian Education Committee.

For more information about the challenge, please come to the June presbytery meeting. In addition, you can contact Andrea Hall at andreabhall@gmail.com with any questions or concerns.

Special Mission Co-Worker Offering

At the April Presbytery meeting, we learned PCUSA World Mission is facing a major financial shortfall.  The Georges’ positions in South Sudan were eliminated in May. If mission giving does not increase, more mission co-workers positions will be eliminated.  The Presbytery council has decided to take an offering at each Presbytery meeting for the next year.  Each meeting the donations will go to a specific mission co-worker. Pastors and Elders attending presbytery are asked to give sacrificially, bringing their own financial offerings as well as any gifts collected from the session, committees, or the congregation.

At this presbytery meeting, we are designating the offering to Nancy McGaughey.

Our hope is for churches to partner with a mission co-worker by praying for them, corresponding with them and financially supporting them.  One way would be to take a special offering for the mission co-worker your church decides to partner with.  The MCS committee will provide you with envelopes, prayer cards, and stories for a mission co-worker.

Nancy trains South Sudanese women to run clinics.  Many have little or no formal education.  Nancy wrote this about one of those training sessions: “At the close of the training, another woman said, “You have given us a small amount of money to pay for our expenses.  This money will not last.  The knowledge and skills you have given us WILL last.  It will help us save lives of women in our communities.  For this we thank IMA (Interchurch Medical Assistance).”

Missional Church Conversation

On Thursday, June 18, at 6:00pm, Scott Hagley will be at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary for a conversation on church mission and community connection. Our time with Scott will focus on the increasing trend of neighborhood development as a counter-movement to suburban sprawl in the Pacific Northwest. As the trend is expected to work toward other communities, we will look at the ways younger generations create community and new ways that church mission connects to this type of community.  Scott has worked with Church Innovations and was a doctoral student at Luther Seminary with that late Rev. Jannie Swart. He will be teaching the Missional Leadership Cohort at Pittsburgh Seminary’s D. Min. program. He currently works with Forge Canada. www.forgecanada.ca.  Dinner will be provided for $10. Carpool option will be available from our presbytery office.  RSVP to the office at office@shenango.org or speak to Ralph Hawkins for more information.
