New Roof at Scotch Hill

The Scotch Hill Church (Grove City) has completed the replacement of their roof (with help from a Presbytery loan). They will have a dedication on November 22.

Mission Opportunity
Adam Soliz, Commissioned Lay Pastor in the Pecos Valley of New Mexico will be in our area from November 14-22. Also, North Liberty Presbyterian Church will be hosting a reunion for everyone who has traveled to the Pecos Valley from our Presbytery on Friday evening, November 20th at 6:00 PM. Jazz at First
First Presbyterian Church of Sharon is pleased to host the jazz quartet “Presbybop” on Sunday, November 15, 7:00 PM. “Presbybop” will present their new CD “Psalms Without Words” at this concert, which is free and open to the public. “Presbybop” is a professional jazz quartet (www.presbybop.com) based in northeastern PA, and led by Presbyterian pastor Rev. “Angered by white residents’ racist comments that he wouldn’t “keep up his yard,” Pearl Fryar teaches himself topiary sculpture and becomes the first African American in his Bishopville, SC neighborhood to win the coveted “yard of the month” award.” Presbyterian Media Mission presents “A Man Named Pearl” at a special event on Wednesday, November 11th at 10:30 AM at the Cranberry Theaters in Cranberry Twp. Cost per participant is $4.00 and there will be a Q&A following the showing of the film with Director, Scott Galloway (son of the former Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church Pastor John Galloway). This award-winning film can be used in your ministry for education purposes and allow for constructive conversation about racism, bigotry, discrimination and other social dynamics that we confront in people being treated without equal regard in a variety of communities across our nation and the world.

Choral Director Honored
After 28 years of faithful service as the Choir Director, Tom Fleet was honored by the Session of Hillside Church, Greenville. Tom is the Principal Percussionist and typanist for the Greenville Symphony Orchestra. The Principal’s Chair was endowed in Tom’s name. Her recently retired as Hillside’s Musical Director as well as the Music Director at Reynold’s High School. Tim, wife Cheryl, and sons Brian and Adam are valued, long-time “Hillsiders”.

Jane Bartholomew Leads at Wee Kirk
Jane (Unity Church) was music and worship leader (which she has done several times) at the October 12-14 Wee Kirk Conference at Laurelville (near Mt. Pleasant, PA). Seven persons participated from Unity with 175 in attendance at this conference for small churches. Jane has been called upon for this kind of leadership in other events in the Synod.

Dear Friends,
A note to let you know that I am safely in Sudan! I have a two bedroom apartment to live in right now – it is older, but the design is a good one. Am being cared for, today I got a new SIM card for the cell phone that I purchased in Nairobi. In the meantime the college has wireless, Praise God! I would love to hear from you, it may take me time to get back to folks so please don’t feel neglected if you don’t hear from me for a while.

Anniversary Celebration

The New Wilmington Presbyterian Church concluded a yearlong celebration of its 200th anniversary on Sunday with a special worship service. The church was also mentioned on Monday in the Mission Yearbook as one of several congregations with long-term involvement in the Dominican Republic.

Youth Leadership Workshop Postponed
The Youth Leadership Workshop, sponsored by the Camping Association (CAPNWP), that had been set for October 23-24 at Westminster Highlands has been postponed until spring. When a new date is set, we will notify our supporting Presbyteries and also mail information to former attendees of the event. The CAPNWP apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused.

International Peacemaker from Democratic Republic of the Congo Visiting Westminster College
Rev. Probe Augustin Mukendi Kabongo is visiting Westminster College this week. Rev. Kabongo will speak at the Seekers Christian Fellowship gathering on Wednesday at 9:00 PM in the Berlin Lounge and at the Peace Studies Coffeehouse on Thursday at 4:15 PM in Thompson-Clark Room 314.

The new internet program “Opening Doors to Discipleship” is available FREE to Presbyterians. It includes three courses: Teacher Training, Bible Background, and Reformed/Presbyterian Theology. Teachers can pick and choose training programs that they personally need. Churches can plan meetings to view and discuss certain training sessions. It’s amazing!

Thai Dance and Drama Troupe at Tower Presbyterian
A team of dancers from Payap University in Chiang Mai, Thailand will present a one hour and thirty-minute program at Tower Presbyterian Church, Grove City on Monday, September 28 at 7:00 PM. The program will feature a number of dances from various regions of Thailand, as well at a traditional Thai melodrama (Likay) with English translation. All are invited to enjoy the performance.

Ingrid Reneau, our missionary to South Sudan, and Debbie Blane (a new missionary to Sudan, who’ll be heading over to Nile Theological Seminary to replace Barry Almy in a few weeks) will be here in Shenango Presbytery starting next week. An Easy Answer to Teacher Training:
  • Tuesday, September 29th – Luncheon at 11:30 AM at the Presbytery Office – See a demonstration of “Opening Doors to Discipleship” an Internet accessed teacher training program that teachers can do at home.
  • Saturday, October 3 – from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Mercer- a repeat of Tuesday’s demonstration.

PW Fall Gathering – Saturday, October 17
Learn something new about Communication at PW Fall Gathering! Check out the list of workshops and choose two to attend at Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church on Saturday, October 17, 2009. Thai Dance and Drama Troupe at Tower Presbyterian
A team of dancers from Payap University in Chiang Mai, Thailand will present a one hour and thirty-minute program at Tower Presbyterian Church, Grove City on Monday, September 28 at 7:00 PM. The program will feature a number of dances from various regions of Thailand, as well at a traditional Thai melodrama (Likay) with English translation. All are invited to enjoy the performance.
